Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the last rites of his mother Heeraben Modi after paying last respects to her at Gandhinagar residence. In videos shared by news agency ANI, the prime minister was seen given Shoulder to and lighting his mother’s pyre. Heeraben was laid to rest at a crematorium in Gandhinagar. She passed away early Friday at the age of 99. She was admitted to a hospital in Ahamedabad on Wednesday after her health condition deteriorated.
It was a very simple funeral ceremony. The prime minister was carrying his mother’s (99-year-old) body this morning. There was no vehicle, no convoy, no police barricade, and no gun salute. India’s prime minister was carrying his mother’s dead body. According to Indian media, it was an eye-opener and a lesson for other politicians to learn.
