Many criminal investigations swept under the rug. There cannot be two rules – Cardinal

The Archbishop of Colombo, Rev. Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, insists that there cannot be two laws in the land and claims that many criminal investigations are being swept under the rug.

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith stated this while taking part in a ceremony held in Katuwapitiya on Saturday (13), to distribute aid donated by His Holiness Pope Francis to the victims of the Easter Sunday bombings on April 21st, 2019.

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, and His Eminence Brian Udaigwe, Vatican Apostolic Ambassador to Sri Lanka, presided over the event.

His Excellency Speaking at the event, Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that Sri Lankans have a bad habit of forgetting terrible events within two weeks.

“Sri Lanka has a tendency to forget the murders, horrific attacks, bus bombs, train bombs, political leader murders, disappearances, and white van abductions that have occurred in this country since time immemorial,” His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said.

The Archbishop of Colombo claimed that no murders or kidnappings in Sri Lanka’s modern history had been properly investigated by any government, and that investigations were sometimes either not allowed or swept under the rug.

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith went on to say that the Easter Sunday attacks were similar.

As a result, the Archbishop of Colombo emphasised the importance of independence for the country’s legal institutions, as well as the Police.

He added that the Police Department cannot continue to cave in to political pressure.

Furthermore, the Archbishop of Colombo stated that in order to achieve justice for the people, the current system must change, or else the same thing will happen if an attack occurs tomorrow.

“That is why we believe our country’s entire system should be overhauled. There cannot be one law for men in suits and another for men on the street. There Cannot Be Two Laws. We do not want to destabilise governments. Justice is what we seek. We ask that the leaders of this country ensure that the country has a transparent justice system. We are willing to go through anything for that purpose “According to the Archbishop of Colombo.
