IMF negotiations successful : Statement from President’s Office

Negotiations between the Sri Lankan government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are going extremely well, according to the President’s Office today.

The President’s Office stated in a statement that the government has made significant progress in negotiations with the IMF with the goal of obtaining the financial institution’s assistance to alleviate economic issues and establish good economic practises in the country.

A comprehensive plan for debt sustainability should be presented in order to have constructive and fruitful discussions with the IMF.

It was hampered by the country’s recent political instability and the preceding government’s policy of refusing to work with the International Monetary Fund.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe currently leads a politically stable government.

The President’s Office also stated that the political negotiations to form an all-party government are going very well.

In this context, the government believes that the negotiations with the IMF can be concluded successfully and that the first step toward financial stability can be taken.
