‘I can bear the sadness, daughter..! Get on the ship and run to a distant country…! Daughter, I’m sorry…!’

Story of a poor mother’s delight after 38 long years!

There is no other person in this world that can bear and suffer as much as a woman. The sufferings she has to face in life are endless and immeasurable. When a child is born, the family lives happily. But some mothers leave their children on the streets and garbage heaps, disrespecting the noble love of children.

There are parents who give their child up to someone else because of some problem in life. But depending on the fate of that child, his/her future may be good or bad. We have heard and seen cases where adoptive parents embrace that child with all their heart and give them the utmost love and care as if it were their own child. Children who grow up in this way become useful people for the world with a good personality. When a child is born, how fortunate is it to have such good parents who take care of their children in a world that suffocates and throws that child into garbage bins?

The bond between a mother and a child is very strong. That bond can never be broken. There is such an unbreakable spiritual strength in giving birth to a child in the womb for ten months. No matter how you try to hide it, it is an eternal truth that at some points that bond will be reunited.

We recently heard a touching story about this great truth. This is the story of a woman who gave her three-month-old baby to a foreign couple, and after many years, the baby turned into an older woman and returned to our country in search of her real mother.

She is coming to Ella to stay at Arawe Retreat for three days. She tells that story to Ishanka Dilshan Ratnayake’s brother who was there. Ishanka told me that story. She was born in Sri Lanka. Because of her mother’s poverty, she was given to a Dutch couple to adopt her. She was three months old then. All we had was a photo of the mother, the date of birth, and the hospital where the girl was born. I and a close friend of mine went to that hospital and obtained the details and went to find the girl’s mother. Finally we were able to find that mother. After 38 years, that mother met her child. Now the child is 38 years old and mother is 58….’

This is very sensitive news that was seen on social media recently. Her name is Marijke Krimers. Lives in the Netherlands. She comes to Ella to stay for three days and spend vacation learning about the culture of Sri Lanka. Marijke Kremers is based in Oriscot, Netherlands. She runs a counselling service at an educational institution in the Netherlands, and she also does project management for a large business in the Netherlands. Anyone who sees her thinks that she has Sri Lankan traits. When she booked Arawe Retreat in Sri Lanka, she might not have thought for a moment that she would be able to see the real mother who gave birth to her in this world. She came to Sri Lanka with two friends. Fortunately, the people of Sri Lanka helped her find her mother. The management of Arawe Retreat didn’t think twice about this either; they also offered to help her. They should be very grateful to Arawe Retreat. She was able to find her mother after 38 years because of their great support.

Marijke came and stayed at our lodge in Ella. After two days of stopping by after leaving a booking, I spoke with her, because she looks very similar to a Sri Lankan girl. She told me her story with the pain that was in her heart for some time. As I felt, when she was about three months old, when her mother gave her to a Dutch couple to adopt. She is very lucky. It was a great opulence for her to being able to find her mother so quickly the first time she came to Sri Lanka. It was her luck. This is not a trip she came to find her mother. While she was staying at the guest house, she had seen her mother time to time in her dreams. She told me she wished she could have found her mother. We don’t think twice when someone asks for help if something possible. We took this job. She only had some pictures and the date of birth at Ratnapura Hospital.

Marijke said that she is living a good life today because she was adopted by her mother in the Netherlands. She also said that she does not know what kind of situation would have arisen if she had been in Sri Lanka.

I then worked towards making this girl’s wish come true. She came to our guest house on the 12th. She returned from Sri Lanka on the 16th. She told me exactly her description on the 14th. When she reaches young age, with her appearance and skin colour, it is known that her real mother and father are not in the Netherlands. I told one of my brothers about this. As he is a social media activist, he was able to find out about this quickly. That brother went to the archives of Ratnapura Hospital with the picture and details. It was easy for them to find out about this because of Malli’s efforts. Later, Mallila had also asked Kalawane Gramasewaka about this. But he had said that there is no such person. Because birth is given with part of mother’s name and part of father’s name, without address. mother’s province was mentioned as Kalwana. We searched mostly there but could not find it there. Somehow, after a lot of effort, I was able to find her real mother….”

The first meeting of this mother and daughter took place at the Ratnapura temple. Everyone who went to the temple had tears in their eyes after seeing this incident. What must have been thoughts when she saw the child who was given away after 38 years? Sometimes you might regret it. But she may not have had anything to do with that past event.

This is how this mother reflected on her past.

In my first marriage, we had to live on the advice of my husband’s mother. We broke up. But because these children are helpless, the elder daughter was given to a Dutch couple to adopt and the younger daughter to a Filipino couple….’

Although this mother did not want to get married again, she got married again due to the influence of her elder sister. She said that she has three sons from that marriage.

At the Ratnapura temple that day, this mother embraced her beloved daughter and warmed herself. They felt the bond of blood. She found her real mother, who she had been searching for years.

This poor mother gave her baby to a distant country 38 years ago with no bad intentions. Because of the suffering she had to face. She did that to give her daughter a better life. That dream has come true and has come right in front of her mother’s eyes today.

It was also learned that the father who gave life to this daughter is alive but he is now paralyzed.

Mr. Ishanka Dilshan told us that Marijke is eager to learn about the culture and language of Sri Lanka, she went to the Netherlands with a thousand hopes, and she hopes to return in the future.

When some family lives are messed up, the little children are helpless. There are many parents in the society who kill their children and leave them on the streets. It is not inappropriate to introduce this mother as a lucky woman among such people. Unable to face the thousand and one sorrows that have come into her life, the sweet dream of this mother, who gave her beloved daughter to a stranger in a distant land, has come true today. How happy would this innocent mother feel when she saw her daughter, whom she had not seen for 38 years, become a complete and freed child for the country? That’s why we say she is indeed a lucky mother…
