Call for probe on Sumanthiran’s criticism of SC: Speaker says the matter in the hands of party leaders

TNA heavyweight declines to comment

Jaffna District TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran, PC yesterday (27) declined to comment on Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakse, PC, calling for the appointment of a Special Parliamentary Select Committee to examine the former’s criticism of the highest court in the country in parliament on Oct 20, the first day of the two-day debate on the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

The Parliament endorsed the new law with an overwhelming 2/3 majority at the end of the debate. Sumanthiran skipped the vote though six out of 10 TNA lawmakers voted for the 21st Amendment.

In a letter to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, the Justice Minister alleged that lawmaker Sumanthiran has questioned the judgments of the Supreme Court on the basis of its determination of the 21st Amendment.Asked whether he was ready to face an inquiry into his statement, lawmaker Sumanthiran declined to comment.

Responding to The Island’s query, Speaker Abeywardena said that he received Minister Rajapaksa’s letter and brought it to the notice of the party leaders. The Speaker said that a decision on the Justice Minister’s request should be made by party leaders
