A British MP has called for an international arrest warrant against Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his “cronies.”

Sir Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat Leader, stated in the House of Commons today (13) that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his “cronies” should be arrested internationally.

“The horrible situation in Sri Lanka has been brought about by the Rajapaksa government’s corruption, tax cuts, skyrocketing defence spending, and draconian police powers,” he said.

Davey went on to suggest that the UK collaborate with international partners to find a comprehensive economic and political solution to “support the democrats in Sri Lanka,” including the issuance of an arrest warrant.

“Can we begin with an economic package with the IMF and others so that we can provide immediate assistance, and can that be followed and included with a political package that includes an international arrest warrant for President Rajapaksa and his cronies?” he inquired.

He went on to request that the package include protection for everyone’s human rights in the country, including Tamil and Muslim minorities.
