Fertility Awareness Day and Book Launch

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Department of Surgery collaboratively conducted the subfertility awareness program and launched a book on 02nd December 2022 at Hoover auditorium at 2.00 pm. There is becoming an alarming rate of the subfertility problem and causing a significant socio-economic burden to our community. However, there is a lack of strategy and resources related to these subfertility issues although there are insignificant collaborative activities and community-based programs in this big social-level issue.

Therefore, the Faculty of Medicine has taken a step to act as a role model to create awareness regarding this at the social level. Consequently, this would increase the capacity of community service members’ involvement efficiently. As a first step, this week has been celebrated at the national level as subfertility awareness week, with advocacy events and recommendations related to this matter. In addition, a book entitled “Subfertility explanations and solutions” was launched. This book provides essential information in detail and is easy to understand for ordinary couples about the challenges, medical issues, and existing treatment options with subfertility.

Further the prescence of Heads of the departments, consultants, doctors, lecturers, staff and heads of various health sectors, members of various
community organizations like mothers’ club,journalists and public not only add more value to this event, but also played a significant role in ensuring the concepts of this event reach throughout the community.The chief guest and special guests lit up the oil lamp which is an integral part of our culture.It was followed by welcome address delivered by the students of 40th batch who anchored the event.

Greeting speech was delivered by Dr.Aru Thirumurugan founder of Sivapoomi Trust, President Tellippalai Sri Durga Devi Devasthanam administrative committee and member of the university council. In his speech he state the magnitude of this issue and the importance of the collaborative action to achieve the targets.

Prof.R.Surenthirakumaran Dean Faculty of Medicine University of Jaffna in his address explained about the pattern of population change, future challenges due to increase in elder population and also expressed his desire to work together in creating awareness among public regarding fertility through the medical faculty.The chief guest Prof.S.Srisatkunarajah Vice Chancellor University of Jaffna addressed the gathering about the importance of fertility awareness in the sustainability of the population and urge the active participation of all health sectors in this aspect.

As a part of creating awareness on fertility among the public this book was launched by Prof.K.Muhunthan Head Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Dr.S.Gobishangar Head Department of surgery, together with the authors of the book Dr.S.Raguraman and Dr.B.Balagobi

First copy was given to the chief guest Prof.S.Srisatkunarajah Vice Chancellor University of Jaffna. Special copies were given to Prof.R.Surenthirakumaran Dean Faculty of Medicine University of Jaffna, Dr.T.Sathiyamoorthy Director Teaching hospital Jaffna Dr.A.Ketheeswaran Regional director of health service Jaffna, and Prof.P.Balasundarampillai former Vice Chancellor University of Jaffna.
Dr.Aru Thirumurugan founder of Sivapoomi Trust and member of University Council, Consultant Paediatrician Prof.Gitanjali Sathiadas, Consultant Paediatrician Dr.K.Arulmoli and the consultants in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dr.G.Bavani, Dr.A.Sritharan, Dr.K.Sureshkumar, Dr.N.Saravanabhava, Dr.K.Guruparan, Dr.M.Vathana, Dr.Y.Gajendra and Dr.S.Sujethra were also received the special copies.


Further Additional Government Agent Mr.M.Piratheepan, President of the Jaffna Medical Faculty Alumni Dr.K.Umashankar and on behalf of GMOA Dr.S.Mathievaanan received the copies. Special copies were also given to the representatives of the mothers’ club and various women development authorities attended the function


The book was reviewed by Prof.S.Kannathasan Dean Faculty of Graduate Studies University of Jaffna. As he was unable to attend the function due to unavoidable reasons the review was played as an audio narration. In the review he appreciated the social interest and efforts shown by the authors and insists the need to create awareness among public regarding subfertility He also stated that this book will be a stepping stone in the path of creating awareness in Northen pennisula.
