Prima Sunrise Bread sponsors 14th Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf 2022 and Regional Junior Opens 2023

For the 14th year running, Prima Sunrise Bread has committed to sponsor the most prestigious event in the junior golf calendar, the Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf and Regional Junior Opens Tournament. With more than a decade of magnanimous sponsorship this generous support by Prima Group Sri Lanka, is ample testimony to its continued commitment to promoting junior golf in the country in partnership with the national body for golf in the country the Sri Lanka Golf.

The Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship is scheduled to be played between 20 – 22nd  December at the Royal Colombo Golf Club. It remains the decisive test for juniors who are also required to make it through the gruelling Regional Junior Opens also sponsored by Prima Sunrise, as well as a number of club level tournaments throughout the year.  The Sri Lanka Junior Open is thus the established benchmark for the world amateur golf rankings (WAGR) for junior golfers. The winner of the Sri Lanka Junior Open will be crowned the National Junior Champion in both boys’ and girls’ categories.

“The committed and continuous sponsorship of junior golf by Prima Sunrise Bread has been invaluable support to Sri Lanka Golf in promoting the sport island wide. The popularity of the sport is growing rapidly in the country due to the development programs being carried out by Sri Lanka Golf. This initiative was launched to identify the nation’s young golf talent with a view to nurturing and developing them for future national and international representation. This year witnesses increased participation of youngsters from the Kandy, Anuradhapura and Nuwara Eliya regions. It is thanks to sponsors like Prima supporting this initiative of Sri Lanka Golf that talented juniors are now coming through the system. Some even competed in the iconic British Junior  Open with distinction this year with one of these juniors (Nirekh Tejwani) later going on to win the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship becoming the youngest Sri Lankan to do so “said  Ms. Niloo Jayatilake, Chairperson of the Junior Subcommittee  of the SLG.

The Sri Lanka Junior Open has been a traditional event held during the month of December and held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club since the 1980’’s run by Sri Lanka Golf. The tournament covers age group categories from 09 years to 18 years. The tournament has grown over the years and approximately 80 to 100 children compete for these Junior Awards. To foster talent from outstations, Regional Junior Opens will be conducted in different parts of the country; namely, Hambantota, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Trincomalee.

This tournament will see defending Champion Yannik Kumara and Kaya Daluwatte compete in the boys and girls categories respectively. However, a stiff competition is expected from Nirekh Tejwani, Vinuda Weerasinghe, K Danushan, Sankanath Hesara and Sherin Balasuriya who is playing competitive golf currently. In the more junior divisions Reshan Algama, Jacob Norton, Thejas Rathis Kanth, Yehan Kenthula and Thenuk Sathinidu of Anuradhapura Academy is likely to show promise in the Silver, Bronze, Copper divisions.

Prima Sunrise Bread, the title sponsor of this tournament, will as always provide nutrition for the players during the event. The Prize giving is scheduled for 22nd December 3.00 PM.
