Ranil Wickremesinghe takes his oath as acting President.

Today, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as Sri Lanka’s Acting President.

According to the Prime Minister’s Media Division, he was sworn in as Acting President in front of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa appointed Ranil Wickremesinghe as Acting President on Wednesday (13), after the latter fled to the Maldives due to a public outcry calling for his resignation.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned as President yesterday (14) after arriving in Singapore, officially vacating the position, and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe takes over as Acting President temporarily in accordance with the Constitution.

Tomorrow (16), the Parliament will meet to begin the process of electing a new President.
