‘Aragalaya’ led to appointment of mandate-less leader: Wimal

The 134 MPs voted for Wickremesinghe because they felt insecure
Ranil Wickremesinghe has no solution for the economic crisis
Situation would worsen in about a month

Mr. Wimal Weerawansa, leader of the National Freedom Front, says the ultimate result of the people’s protests, the ‘Aragalaya,’ is that former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who won the people’s mandate, was sent home, while Ranil Wickremesinghe, who lost the election, was elected President.

He claimed that Wickremesinghe was elected by Parliament to oppose the people’s struggle, which lacked any strategic moves.

He stated that the 134 MPs voted for Wickremesinghe because they felt insecure, and that the new President and those who secured victory will be unable to lift the country out of its current state of crisis.
Further, the MP stated that the other MPs believe that Presidential Candidate Dullas Alahapperuma is too democratic and may even support the protestors.

MP Weerawansa stated that he does not believe that the new President and the group that elected him will be able to get the country out of its current crisis, which is why an all-party Government was proposed by MP Dullas Alahapperuma, which would have included Opposition parties, granting it a level of multilateralism in policies, with growth of trust in a fair attempt and a solution from the people’s side.

He emphasised that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has no solution for the economic crisis, as he has no other solution other than the IMF, which would only exacerbate the crisis.Noting that few envoys from notable nations congratulated the newly-elected President, the MP stated that the lack of gesture demonstrates the international community’s trust in him.

As a result, MP Weerawansa predicted that the situation would worsen in about a month, with growing unrest leading to brutality. He also stated that the eventual situation could pave the way for foreign nations to intervene in the country.
