A police constable on duty at the Gampaha Court Complex has said that news websites are not accepted as media in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka Latest News

Police Constable 82026 W.A.S.P. kumara, who is on duty at the Gampaha Court Complex, said that social media such as websites and YouTube may not be given the opportunity to report court proceedings.

He has stated that to the relevant journalists who went to the Gampaha court complex to cover the case in which Mr. Shani Abeysekera was released. Police Constable 77925 M.R.A.N. Abeyaratna  another person had stated that journalists should always have their media ID card hanging around the journalist’s neck. He has informed that people who do not hang around their necks and people who work on the web are not journalists.

Complaints have been made to Gampaha Acting Divisional Superintendent of Police Chinthaka Perera regarding these two officers and their scandalous behavior and the Superintendent of Police has given written notice to the Assistant Superintendent of Police Gampaha to investigate the matter immediately and give a report within two weeks.

The police also said this to a Voice TV journalist who went to the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court on July 28 and while the journalists of the main media were in the court complex, only that journalist was informed to leave the court complex.
