The Election Commission has informed the Supreme Court today that all necessary steps have been taken to hold the local government polls.

When the petition presented by Mr. W. M R. Wijesundara a retired army colonel was called today, President’s Counsel Mr. Saliya Peiris, who appeared on behalf of the Chairman of the Election Commission and its members, gave this notice.

This petition was called today before the Supreme Court bench comprising of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, S. Thurai Raja and Mr. Janak de Silva.

The lawyer who appeared on behalf of the petitioner requested permission to present the amended petition in relation to this fundamental rights petition.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court allowed the petitioner to submit an amended petition and ordered that the petition be called on the 18th to consider the petition.

Meanwhile, President’s Attorney Salia Peiris, who represented the Chairman and members of the Election Commission, stated before the court that the Attorney General has been informed that he will not appear on behalf of the Election Commission.
