It has now become clear that UNP Member of Parliament Mr. Vajira Abeywardena has nothing to do with the incident of Mr. Ali Sabri Rahim, who was arrested for illegally bringing gold to Sri Lanka from Katunayake Airport. Sri Lanka Latest News

Last June 26, ‘The Island’ newspaper quoted a statement by lawyer Mr. Nagananda Kodithuvakku on its front page and reported that Mr. Vajira Abeywardena had intervened in the case of Mr. Ali Sabri.

The Island newspaper also reported that Mr. Nagananda Kodithuvakku said that he would go to court.

However, Island newspaper also reported the news that Mr. Nagananda’s statement was rejected by Mr. Vajira Abeywardena’s office.

In spite of this, the ‘Lankasara’ website reported another news last Saturday saying that Mr. Vajira Abeywardena had intervened to free some gold items brought by a woman who had come from the Middle East.

The Lankasara website stated that this was confirmed by a letter sent by the Director General of Customs to the Director of Bandanayake International Airport.

However, today the Lankasara website reported that anyone can directly or indirectly appeal to the customs regarding the confiscation of any product.

In an inquiry to Customs Media Spokesman Senior Director Sudatta Silva, he has stated that MP Vajira Abeywardena did not exert such pressure or influence on the Chief of Customs, but only made a formal appeal to the Chief of Customs.

This statement of the Customs spokesperson confirms that Mr. Vajira Abeywardena has nothing to do with the incident of Mr. Ali Sabri Rahim.
