This morning (24th), the Iranian President arrived at the island from Mattala Airport, where he was received by the Prime Minister.

The Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project was started in 2011 based on a loan from the Export Development Bank of Iran.

The multi-purpose project is 24 kilometres in length, centred in Uva province.

From the Puhulpola Reservoir, water is taken to the Dyaraba Reservoir for a distance of 4 km through underground pipelines, and then from the Diaraba Reservoir, the water is taken to the Powerhouse Plant through a 15.5 km long underground line.

The electricity capacity to be added to the country’s national electricity system is 120 megawatts.

Also, through that project, drinking water will be supplied to Bandarawela, Badulla and Monaragala areas and water for agricultural needs in Badulla and Monaragala areas.

The total cost of the project is 514 million dollars, and during the period when the project started, 450 million dollars had been agreed to be provided by the Iranian government.

However, due to the sanctions problems that arose after the Iranian government provided 50 million dollars, the Iranian government was unable to provide the entire amount to the government of this country.

Later, the cost of the project was carried out through the Government of Sri Lanka.

The multi-purpose project was supposed to be completed in 2015 but due to political, economic and social problems, the project had to be implemented until now.
