Türkiye insists on not signing the resolution on Sri Lanka.

Türkiye has stated that it will not sign a resolution on Sri Lanka brought to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and that a list of sponsors circulating earlier was incorrect.

In a letter to the media, Turkish Ambassador to Sri Lanka Demet ekerciolu stated that Türkiye (previously known as Turkey) has never co-sponsored a resolution on Sri Lanka at the UNHRC, neither in the past nor during the Council’s current 51st session.

She also mentioned that Turkey had made an intervention in the interactive debate on Sri Lanka, which was held on September 12, 2022, during the Council’s 51st session.

Türkiye stated in its statement that, considering the enormity of Sri Lanka’s social and economic issues, the Sri Lankan government should be given time to fulfill its commitments and supported during these difficult times.

The media claimed yesterday that more countries had signed on as co-sponsors to the resolution on Sri Lanka in Geneva, and Turkey was listed in the latest draught.

“After further investigation, it revealed that the error was due to a misreference of the draught resolution with the incorrect sponsors’ list,” Türkiye’s Ambassador explained.

The draught resolution, titled “Promoting reconciliation, accountability, and human rights in Sri Lanka,” was originally sponsored by the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Canada, Malawi, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.
