The Minister of Constitutional Affairs has taken the first step toward postponing the local government election.

As a lot of public money is spent on elections according to the existing election systems, a proposal is requested to appoint a parliamentary selection committee to find and report and recommend a suitable election system to elect public representatives to the parliament, provincial councils and local governments. Constitution Amendment Minister Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa handed over to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday (26).

The proposal handed over by the Minister of Justice states that the speaker should nominate the chairman and members of this committee and its members should not exceed twenty one.

He suggested that the services of persons with special knowledge and experts be obtained for the assistance of the Committee and that the report of the Committee should be submitted to the Parliament within a period of six months from the date of its first meeting or such period as may be extended by the Parliament. –
