The government must uphold the constitution and democracy, says the Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference urged the government to uphold the country’s Constitution and democracy, and to refrain from taking any unwarranted steps that would jeopardise the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of speech and expression of all its citizens.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka emphasised that it is the responsibility of all government and non-government institutions to respect and uphold the independence of the judiciary.

It went on to say that such interference is completely unnecessary at this critical juncture in the country’s history.
