The first female speaker of the House of Commons has died at the age of 93.

Fiona Garrett, Foyle UUP’s Women’s Officer, is sad to announce that Betty Boothroyd, the first woman Speaker of the House of Commons, has passed away.

Boothroyd was a prominent figure in British politics and an early trailblazer for women in Parliament. She was the first female Speaker of the House of Commons in history, having been elected in 1992, a role which she held until her retirement in 2000. Boothroyd was an inspirational figure to many and will be remembered for her tireless service in the Houses of Parliament.

Fiona said ‘she really was a strong inspirational woman, who as Speaker took no nonsense. ‘

Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.
