A senior police officer said that it appears from the questioning of the suspect that the couple was not staying at the Pelawatte house when the murder took place as suspected in the initial investigations. The main suspect told the Colombo Crime Division officials that only he and the millionaire businessman were staying in the house at the time of the murder, the officer said. The officer further said that the suspect’s statements said that he had paid 1000 rupees and bought a pack of three contraceptive caps from a pharmacy located in Kalubowila area and had come directly to Pelawatta and his wife, who was said to be with him, had not come to Pelawatta at that time. The police said that although he said why he went to this house, his close relationship with the businessman and many other things during the police interrogation, scientific evidence and many other investigations will have to be done to confirm whether they are 100 percent true.

Accordingly, the material inside the used contraceptive sheath found in the house where the businessman was killed, as well as the material stuck to the outside of the sheath, were subjected to  DNA testing. A senior police officer said that they will even be sent for an investigation. Not only the businessman who was killed here, but also the couple’s DNA. The officer also said that an inspection will have to be done. According to the suspect, he and the businessman were in the bath. The suspect said that he asked him for one lakh rupees saying that the money was urgent. The suspect also told the officials of the Colombo Crimes Division that the businessman said that he could not give that much money and that he would give him whatever amount was in his wallet.

He also said that his hand was also twisted there. The suspect said that he fell on the ground near the bath tub after being hit by the stick and tried to get up but could not get up. The suspect has said that he then dragged him to the swimming pool, took the wallet and the bag and went to Kolonnawa in his own car. The suspect further said that he had told his wife that he was in the middle of a big problem and that he was leaving the country for a few days and that he had to take her as the wife.  A senior police officer of the Colombo Crime Division stated that further investigations should be conducted regarding the suspect’s statements to protect his wife from the accusation of murder. Therefore, they will be detained for a day or two and investigations will have to be conducted, the official said.
