The chief engineer of a cargo ship belonging to the state of Abu Dhabi, which was anchored at the Galle Fishing Port, fell into the sea early this morning and died while on the upper floor of the ship, the port police said.

A senior police officer of the area told Lankadeepa that the chief engineer who fell into the sea was immediately brought ashore by the ship’s crew and admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

A 62-year-old chief engineer from Lithuania has died.

The police say that the ship was anchored at the Galle fishing port since the 29th due to bad weather conditions.

The senior police officer said that information investigations have revealed that the chief engineer of the cargo ship fell into the sea while he was engaged in some work on the upper floor.
