The Central Bank Bill is to be debated in Parliament.

In this regard, the opposition went before the court and the court had taken steps to amend many of its clauses.

Mr. Udaya Gammanpila said that the Supreme Court has proposed 82 amendments to 39 articles.

He also stated that this is the first time he has come across a bill that has been extensively amended and scrutinised by the Supreme Court.

This bill was drafted in 2023 with the participation of IMF staff and Sri Lankan authorities. As agreed with the EFF, this effort to strengthen the Central Bank’s independence should be presented to the Sri Lankan parliament and passed for implementation.
