Yesterday (13) the British Supreme Court ordered Palihavadana, a well-known lawyer among Sinhalese people in Britain, to publicly apologise to Yasmin Sooka for falsely accusing her of having relations with LTTE terrorists.
Yasmin Sooka is a South African lawyer and human rights activist who also serves as the Executive Director of the International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP)
According to ITJP, Jeyaraj has also agreed to pay her a substantial sum as compensation.
Jeyaraj Palihavadana, who worked as the British representative for deposed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa until recently, has publicly apologised before the court for making false statements against Yasmin Sooka.
Palihawadana, who accused Yasmin Souka of bias in favour of a banned terrorist organisation, sent a report to 47 diplomatic missions in Geneva in 2021, claiming that Souka’s claims are false.
Yasmin Sooka has filed a Data Protection Act case in the British High Court, challenging the publication of false personal information about her as a result of the defamation caused by the false facts in this report.
Palihavadana, the losing attorney, apologised in open court for making false statements about Yasmin Sooka.
To demonstrate the sincerity of the apology, the respondent has agreed to pay the complainant a substantial sum of money as compensation for the emotional distress and reputational damage caused by the reports.
Yasmin Sooka is also ready to use the money to establish a fund for victims of human rights violations in Sri Lanka, according to ITJP.
