Sri Lanka rejects UN Human Rights Office report

Sri Lanka has categorically rejected resolution 46/1 which was presented at the 51st regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva today.

The report on Sri Lanka from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights was presented by the Acting High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif. 

Presenting the report, Nada Al-Nashif said that the situation in Sri Lanka was fragile and called for accountability for human rights violations.

Addressing the UNHRC, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said Sri Lanka categorically rejects resolution 46/1 as it violates the sovereignty of the people of Sri Lanka and the UN Charter. 

He further said that Sri Lanka will be compelled to reject any follow-up measures to the resolution and recommendations by the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights. 

Minister Ali Sabry also reiterated the Sri Lankan Government’s unwavering commitment towards advancing, securing, and protecting human rights.

He further reiterated Sri Lanka’s continued engagement with the Human Rights Council in a spirit of cooperation, and dialogue, and pursuing tangible progress in the protection of human rights and reconciliation through independent domestic institutions. 

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister also said that the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) will be replaced with a national security legislation in accordance with international best practices.
