Spike in Price Gouging Targeting Foreign Tourists; Sri Lankan Trader Arrested for Theft

The Consumer Affairs Authority stated that the concerned person, who is a three-wheeler driver in Kalutara area, has sold food at higher prices by pretending to be a trader.

At a time when the tourism industry in Sri Lanka is resurgent, we recently uncovered two incidents that add black spots to it on Hiru News.

There was also an incident where a foreigner was sold a cup of tea and a wade for 800 rupees at a shop in Kalutara area.

The Moragolla Tourist Police, who were involved in the related incident, tried to contact the foreigner, but he was already abroad.

However, the police contacted X through social media and received a written complaint from him to take legal action.

It was after that that the police arrested the person who sold the food to the foreigner at a higher price.

The raids and special investigation division of the Consumer Affairs Authority also joined the raid, and it was revealed that the person in question was not a trader in that shop.

It has been revealed that he, who works as a tricycle driver, came under the guise of showing the foreigner a place to eat and sold food at a higher price.

Accordingly, the three-wheeler driver who was arrested will be produced in the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Consumer Affairs Authority has taken steps to file a case against the owner of the shop in question.
