SJB and TNA urge the government to charge cigarettes and cease taxing the poor heavily on necessary commodities(VIDEO)

Mr. Shanathaya Rasamanikkam, TNA Member of Parliament, stated that the government is not implementing a proper tax policy for the cigarette industry, and as a result, the country is losing a lot of tax money.

He stated this at the first-ever press conference held in Colombo by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the Tamil National Alliance.

According to the MP, the cigarette company earned 40 billion rupees in 2021 and 50 billion in 2022.

However, the MP also pointed out that the government taxes goods consumed by the poor while receiving no tax revenue from cigarettes.
