Part time jobs/Internships for school students: New decision from labour ministry

The Labour Ministry has taken steps to amend the Labour Law to allow school students aged 16 to 20 to participate in internship programmes at private companies.

Several disputes in the labour industry have been observed during a discussion chaired by subject Minister Manusha Nanayakkara, as students are not trained for various job environments.

As a result, it has been decided to enrol high school students aged 16 to 20 in internship programmes lasting 20 hours per month.

The Labour Ministry will also allow private companies to pay students during this training period.
