Over 1521 FR cases filed against the Police Department.

Today (16) , the Attorney General informed the Supreme Court that there are approximately 1521 FR complaints filed against the Police.

When the Professor Arjuna Parakrama FR plaint was heard in the Supreme Court yesterday, senior state counsel Shamendra Wickrama represented the Attorney General informed the court that various parties have filed approximately 1521 FR cases against the police department, and once the authenticity of the presented facts is established, Mr Shamendra Wickrama requested that the courts proceed in delivering the relevant verdict.

According to Professor Arjuna Parakrama’s FR petition, on January 20th, professionals organised a walking protest from the Colombo campus to the Ministry of Finance in Colombo Fort, demanding solutions to the people’s current economic problems.

Police obstructing this peaceful and legal demonstration in various locations, preventing the democratic right of the people to freely express themselves, which is a fundamental human right that police have violated.

Professor Arjuna Parakrama accused Assistant superintendent of police Colombo fort Mr Nalin Dilruk, OIC police station fort, police superintendent in charge of the region , and western provincial deputy inspector general Mr Deshabandu Tennakoon in this FR plaint for breaching fundamental human right of peaceful expression.

Mr Shamindra Wickrama, the senior state counsel, asked the court for a date to file limited objections to the charges. As a result, the Supreme Court extended the deadline for filing objections until April 28th, and the hearing will take place on May 31st.
