No free spending in elections: legislation restricting the amount of money spent by candidates in elections will be effective

The Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Mr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa said that he received approval to publish the ‘Bill for Making Arrangements for Controlling Election Expenses’ in the Government Gazette and submit it to Parliament, which includes the law to limit the amount of money spent by candidates in an election.

According to this Act, the Election Commission decides the amount that can be spent by a candidate, and if a candidate spends more than that and wins, the Election Commission has the power to deprive that Member of Parliament.
