Most sitting-strangle deaths are homicides! While some newspapers report Shafter’s suicide, a forensic doctor explains the opinion!!

Channa Perera, Forensic Medicine Specialist of the Colombo East Base Hospital, says that there are experiences of post-mortem examinations of deaths caused by strangulation while a person is sitting without hanging from a rope, and almost all of them are homicides.

The expert forensic doctor says this while joining a discussion with Dylan Mayadunne on behalf of Hiru News Service, focusing on the mysterious death of Dinesh Shafter.

The forensic doctor says:

A neck injury can cause death to a person with minimal or no injuries. That is why, when a post-mortem examination is done, several special dissections are done, especially around the neck of a person. Those dissections were published in the nineteen fifties.

“What we are doing is dissecting the neck layer by layer. Keep an eye out for puncture wounds. In some cases strangulation can result in homicide with minimal or in some cases no injuries. It can also be detected if it is done without injuries. But it is a very rare phenomenon. In such a case, it becomes difficult for the forensic medical officer to take a decision in this regard.
