Last resort to postpone elections! Tomorrow a special zoom meeting!

The government has taken procedures to hold a special discussion regarding the appointment of the Legislative Council tomorrow in order to delay the local government election.

According to reports, the discussion to be led by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena is scheduled to take place tomorrow at 4.30 p.m. using Zoom technology.

This discussion will also include Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, in addition to the Speaker.

According to political sources, the parties of the government wish to make a definitive decision over the appointment of three civilians to the Legislative Council.

This is because the names of the three civil representatives must be approved by the Parliament in a resolution for the Constituent Assembly to function.

It is rumoured that the government planned to call the parliament, which was scheduled to meet on the 17th of January, on the 5th with the intention of presenting and adopting these three names.

According to opposition political sources, the government intends to find a means to postpone the local government elections as soon as possible by appointing the Legislative Council.

In this regard, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Sajith Premadasa, and the leaders of the opposition parties held a special discussion this morning, and according to reports, it was a lengthy conversation.
