Know why Queen Elizabeth II always carried her black handbag along? It wasn’t just a fashion statement

Queen Elizabeth II’s famous consistency in her accessories is a well-kept secret that not many know. She used her purse to send secret messages and signals to her staff. These directions, shifts, and changes in the position of the bag helped her get out of conversations at any time she pleased.

If you take a good look at some of Queen Elizabeth II’s photos right from the 1950s to 2022, you’ll notice she almost always had her black purse hanging from her hand or by her side.
While it is expected of anyone to carry a purse while in public, the queen was photographed an unusual number of times with her Launer Handbags
It was indeed a fashion statement that lasted over seven decades. But it was also something that made her feel comfortable in public.

Queen Elizabeth II’s famous consistency for her accessory is a well-kept secret that not many know. She used her purse to send secret messages and signals to her staff. These directions, shifts, and changes in the position of the bag helped her get out of conversations any time she pleased.

In fact, every movement or position conveyed a different message.

When the Queen moved her classic Launer handbag from its normal spot on the left arm to her right arm while talking to someone, it meant she wanted to wrap the conversation.

Similarly, putting the bag on the floor was a sign that she was feeling uncomfortable with a person and needed to get out. During dinner, if she placed her handbag on the table, it signalled that she wanted to end the meal in the next five minutes.

She had her famous Launer bag on her even during her final engagement, when she appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss at Balmoral Castle on September 6.

Therefore, the handbag was an important security tool that made Queen Elizabeth feel safe and comfortable during engagements and conversations.

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith had told media outlets that the items inside her black handbag were regular and very similar to what most women carry in their bags.

She kept things thing a mirror, lipstick, mint lozenges, and a pair of reading glasses.

In 2018, the CEO of Launer, Gerald Bodmer, told a magazine that Queen Elizabeth never felt fully dressed without her handbag.

“She doesn’t feel fully dressed without her handbag. But if the Queen doesn’t like what we’ve made her, she won’t wear it. She definitely knows what she wants,” Bodmer told New Idea magazine.
