Kanchana blames TUs for inefficiencies in SOEs

On Saturday (27), Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara slammed trade unions, saying they thrive on inefficient members, and emphasised the importance of restructuring state-owned enterprises.

In a tweet, the Minister stated that all SOEs require restructuring and that political decisions, political appointments, misadministration, and incompetence are to blame for the SOEs’ current demise.

He also stated that the majority of the public workforce will either survive or be recruited in the private sector and that performance-based pay must be implemented.

The Minister also criticised the inefficiency and incompetence of workers at CEB, CPC, and CPSTL, as well as the workforce downsizing.

“A good 500 workforce instead of the 4200 at CPC-CPSTL & half of the 26000 at CEB could do the job efficiently,” he tweeted.

The Minister claimed a week ago that Ceylon Petroleum Corporation trade unions linked to political parties were carrying out protests against the CPC’s proposed reforms.

The Minister recently formed a seven-member committee to restructure the Ceylon Electricity Board.
