Election monitoring organizations say that they will inform the international community about the local government poll not being held on March 09 as planned.
Mr. Manjula Gajanayake, Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Reforms and Electoral Studies stated that it has been observed that it is not possible to prevent the postponement of the elections locally.

Mr. Manjula Gajanayake also stated that more than 80,000 candidates who submitted their nominations due to the postponement of the election have been subjected to serious injustice.

Meanwhile, the Pafrel organization says that it will once again take legal action against the postponement of the election.

Its Executive Director, Mr. Rohana Hettiarachchi said that every possible step will be taken to secure the voting rights of the people.

The Election Commission announced yesterday (24) that the local government polls scheduled to be held on the 9th of March will not be held on that day.

In a statement issued by the commission, it was stated that matters that have arisen outside the control of the Election Commission have affected this.

The relevant announcement issued by the commission further stated that the date of the polling will be announced on March 03.
