An exchange of words took place between the Minister of Power and Energy, Kanchana Wijesekera, and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament, Chaminda Wijesiri, in Parliament recently, based on the accusations that the minister was going to marry the daughter of the owner of the company that acts as the local representative of the ‘Sinopec’ company.

While denying the accusation, Minister Wijesekera said, “Sinopec had made a statement about its local representative and other information. But regarding the false accusation against me, I will raise a question of privilege on another day.’

The Wijesiri MP said that he only questioned whether there was a conflict of interest in allowing the Chinese company to enter the local fuel market and did not intend to slander the minister.

The MP said that the Privileges Committee should not become a torture chamber like Batalanda.
