In Geneva, government vow to establish a truth-seeking mechanism by March 2023

Foreign Minister Ali Sabri has stated that a fact-finding mechanism is expected to be established before March 2023 to investigate allegations of human rights violations.

This fact-finding mechanism is to be established based on the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to evaluate the findings of the previous commissions and committees headed by Mr. Supreme Court Judge A.H.M.D. Nawaz

This Presidential Commission of Inquiry was appointed by former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in January 2021.

Its final report is expected to be released this month.

The report will propose to investigate, report or take necessary action based on the findings of previous commissions or committees appointed to investigate violations of human rights, grave violations of international humanitarian law and other such offences.

The commission’s first report was submitted to the then President Rajapaksa in July 2021.

Addressing an internet forum yesterday (5), Minister of Foreign Affairs M.U.M. Ali Sabri mentioned that the final report of the commission headed by Justice Nawaz is expected to be received this month, and based on its results, the truth-seeking mechanism will be established.
