Govt. directly handles matter with Chinese Embassy

According to the reports, the government has taken over the diplomatic handling of the Yuan Wang 5 ship directly through the Chinese Embassy in Colombo rather than through the Sri Lankan mission in Beijing.

Following security concerns raised by India, Sri Lanka asked China to postpone the ship’s port call.

The Yuan Wang 5, on its way from the Chinese port of Jiangyin, was scheduled to arrive in the Chinese-run port of Hambantota on August 11.

It sparked a diplomatic spat with India, raising fears that the ship’s visit to Hambantota would spark security threats.

According to reliable sources, the Sri Lankan mission in Beijing has informed the government that the indefinite postponement will have disastrous consequences for the country.

The government is now dealing with the Chinese embassy directly.
