Former CB deputy governor issues a dire warning against allowing the dollar to fall in order to appease politicians. It must be handled with extreme caution because it has two edges.

Mr. W.A Wijewardena, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, says that the Central Bank cannot please the politicians by letting the dollar fall.

He said that the collapse of the dollar and the rapid strengthening of the rupee is like a double-edged sword, and it should be handled very carefully.

He said that due to this situation, the people who import will get an advantage due to being able to buy dollars at a low price, but it will be disadvantageous for the people who send dollars to Sri Lanka, including foreign workers.

He stated that the central bank cannot be silent to please the politicians by allowing the dollar to fall by saying that the rupee will strengthen and that their silence is putting the country’s economy into crisis in another way.
