Following Wasantha Mudalige’s revelations, the select committee decided to convene a meeting with all relevant parties, to discuss the future activities.

• Steps to call the Vice-Chancellors, Ministry of Higher Education, Inter-University Students’ Union and other relevant parties to the Parliamentary Select Committee to discuss the future work.

The Convenor of the Inter-University Students’ Union (Avishibama) Mr. Wasantha Mudalige revealed that the students are suffering because the Faculty of Computer and Technology of the University of Kelaniya has not released the results for 12 months.

He stated this when he was summoned to the Parliamentary Select Committee to make appropriate recommendations for expanding higher education opportunities in Sri Lanka. The committee met in Parliament recently (25) under the chairmanship of its chairman, Minister of Justice (Dr.) President’s Attorney Mr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa.

The Parliamentary Select Committee for making appropriate recommendations for expanding higher education opportunities in Sri Lanka had called the Inter-University Student Body before the committee to discuss the existing problems related to higher education and to look into the proposals and future activities that could be presented for it.

Emphasizing that education should be a right and not a privilege, the convener of the Inter-University Student Council pointed out that the university education of many students is failing due to the weaknesses of the higher education system.
Furthermore, it was revealed that the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences of the University of Peradeniya has not yet submitted the schedule of academic days and the University of Sabaragamuwa has not yet agreed to conduct the examinations.

Accordingly, the committee decided to call all relevant parties including the Ministry of Higher Education, Vice Chancellors of all universities, representatives of the inter-university student body before the committee for collective discussion and discuss the future work.

The committee members are Minister of State Hon. (Dr.) Sita Arambepola, Honorable Members of Parliament Honorable Rauf Hakeem, Honorable Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Honorable Eran Wickramaratne, Honorable (Professor) Charita Herath and Honorable Dayasiri Jayasekara participated in the committee meeting.
