A debate has been created in the society about whether the parliamentary election or the presidential election should be held first.Sri Lanka Latest News

The Election Commissioner General Mr. Saman Sri Ratnayake has told The Island newspaper that even though all parties agreed to hold a general election, the presidential election which should be held within the specified time cannot be postponed at all.

For the presidential election to be held this year, money has already been allocated from the 2024 budget document.

Mr. Saman Sri Ratnayake has further said that the money so allocated cannot be spent for the general election for any reason.

Mr. Saman Sri Rathnayake added that although the President dissolves the Parliament according to the power he has, the funds required for holding a parliamentary election have not been allocated in the budget, so the President should provide the funds for that from the joint fund.
