Social media has proven to be inaccurate. The alleged murderer of Kalutara schoolgirl is not the ‘aragalaya leader.

We often see the spread of false information by using photos of people with similar images, giving false interpretations to current news.

In this way, below is our investigation on some misleading and fake photographs that have been published indicating the main suspect in the Kalutara girl murder, which has been discussed among many people these days.

Social Media Notes:

Referring to the photos of the main suspect in the Kalutara girl’s murder, a comparison of another photo with similarities to the real photo of the suspect showed that the main suspect in the Kalutara girl’s murder was a person who was involved in the struggle last season. A picture taken during last year’s struggle was also used for that.

Also, this photo was widely shared on WhatsApp, indicating that the person shown in the first photo above is the suspect in the incident involving the Kalutara girl.

From the responses to this photo post, it appears that many have assumed that the person involved in the struggle in the first photo above is the real suspect.

Also, another photo was posted as a photo of the person related to the incident.

From some of the responses given to this photo post, some people assumed that this is the real suspect.

Due to this, we took steps to investigate the accuracy of this.

Fact Check:

In order to check who is the person shown in the struggle in the first photo above, we asked for information from several members who actively contributed to the struggle. They mentioned that a photograph of a person associated with the arts by the name of Shalika Rukshan Senadheera, who was an active member of the struggle, is being misused and spread falsehood. They also confirmed that the district organizers and other positions or members were not divided during the struggle.

Accordingly, we checked his Facebook account and we came to see that he had used one photo from his photo album posted on his Facebook account on June 27, 2022 to create the above false posts.

We inquired about this from Rukshan Senadheera over the phone and he said that such false things are being spread on social media to spread falsehoods about the people who participated in the struggle.

We also discovered about the person in the photo in the second post and he is the person named Chamara Dilshan who runs the YouTube channel called chama.

We contacted Chamara Dilshan over the phone to confirm this and he mentioned that even though a note was exchanged indicating himself as the suspect in the Kalutara incident in an entertaining manner, many people have accepted it as true.

Below is a post where the news regarding Chama has been corrected.

Also, some mainstream media outlets had revealed the name of the real suspect to be a person named Dhanushka Gayan Sabandu. Accordingly, it is confirmed through the names of other persons that were shown in the photos that were posted as the suspect.

Furthermore, Shalik Rukshan Senadheera or Chamara Dilshan should be in police custody as the real suspect is currently in police custody.

However, we made an inquiry to the Police Media Spokesperson Mr. Nihal Talduwa to inquire whether the information has been revealed that the real suspect was a person who was involved in the struggle, and he said that the police investigation into the incident is ongoing and it is not clear whether he is a person who was involved in the struggle or not. That there was not, and that a suspect’s politics are not relevant to investigations until an incident becomes a political issue, so they are not investigated. Also, it was confirmed that the person was the main organizer of the struggle in Kalutara district, and that the police never disclosed any such information to the media that was not investigated, and the name of the main suspect in the incident was Dhanushka Gayan Sabandu.

Reported information about the murder of the Kalutara schoolgirl

Last 05, the naked body of a young woman was found lying near the railway line behind a hotel on Kalutara Galle Road and it was revealed that the deceased was a 16-year-old student who was a resident of Nagoda area of Kalutara and was studying in the eleventh year of a girls’ school in Kalutara area. Regarding the incident, a young man and a young woman who allegedly came to the hotel with the girl have been arrested and a person who is said to have stayed in the hotel room with the girl had fled. The police had started investigations to find that person in the past few days, and the police said that this morning (09) the person was arrested in Galle, Hikkaduwa area.

A 29-year-old resident of Isuru Uyane, Kalutara, has been arrested. Based on information received by Kalutara Headquarters Police Inspector Ruwan Wijesinghe that the suspect is hiding in the Galle area, a group of crime branch officers headed by Crime Division Station Commander Inspector Dhammka Silva raided the Galle area this morning. Police Media Spokesperson Mr. Nihal Talduwa said. The video is here. It is said that the suspect will be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court and summon orders will be obtained.

The concerned couple and a man who helped the main suspect to escape have been remanded until May 15.

Conclusion:
Our investigation shows that the other photographs exchanged with the photograph of the main suspect who is in police custody in connection with the death of the schoolgirl in Kalutara area, are not of the suspect, Dhanushka Gayan Sahabandu, but of other persons. Both of those people are not in custody and we have been confirmed over the phone that fake news has been created targeting them.

The people were thus misled by these fake notes, which were created just for vindictiveness and just to link people with the real suspect to the struggle and spread false propaganda.
