Another opportunity for ministers! The Treasury has paid 86 crores only for the rental houses provided by the government instead of the burnt houses!

An amount of eighty-six crores and forty lakh rupees per year has been paid to the treasury for 101 houses that have been provided from the superior apartment complex at Viatpura in Weeramawata, Pannipitiya, on a monthly rental basis, instead of the houses destroyed by fire during the clashes on July 9.

Accordingly, a senior official of the Urban Development Authority told the Island Sunday News that the amount that the Treasury has to pay for it in one month is seven million and twenty lakhs.

During the political unrest in the country last May 09, some saboteurs set fire to and damaged the private houses of parliament ministers.

After the investigations carried out based on the complaints received, it was reported that about 51 houses of the Minister were severely damaged and destroyed. However, the official also said that all 101 houses in Block B of Viatpura Apartment Complex have been given to the Minister and his relatives. Meanwhile, the names of a significant number of Tamil and Muslim parliamentarians have also been listed.

During the time of Metropolitan and Western Development Minister Mr. Patali Champika Ranawaka (2017), steps were taken to build this super apartment complex. It was only after the struggle that the government took steps to provide houses in this housing complex belonging to the Housing Development Authority to the Ministers on rental basis.

This Viatpura super apartment complex was built for professionals including the doctors of Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital, Sri Jayawardenapura University teachers and doctors of Maharagama Cancer Hospital. The official said that some professionals have been waiting for more than two years after paying between one and sixty lakh rupees to two and forty lakh rupees to get these houses.
