A senior police officer said that since the shooting took place when the fundamental rights petition was being heard in the Supreme Court, the owner of the phone shop is suspected by the police to be involved in the shooting.

A 22-year-old youth named Aluthgage Mindika, a resident of Welipitiya was killed in the shooting that took place last night (20). He has been working temporarily as a quality inspector in a garment factory located in that area. The police say that this young man is preparing to go to work in Korea soon. Police investigations have revealed that this young man, who was killed by gunshots, was not involved in any crime or illegal activities. Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Southern Province Mr. Sajeeva Medawatta said that it appears that he is innocent.

In the investigation, it was found that five shots were fired from a pistol using 09 mm ammunition and 03 shots hit the young man. The police have now confirmed that the shooters missed the target. The target is the owner of this telephone outlet, said the Senior DIG. The motorcycle on which the shooters came was found abandoned in Bandattara area of Matara. Police suspect that it might be a stolen motorcycle. According to the number plate mentioned on the motorcycle, investigations are going to be conducted to identify its owner.
