The leader of the opposition said that the government led by the current president is leading the process of destroying the democratic system of this country and at this moment, a number of conspiracies have been implemented to prevent the local government elections that should be held on time by completely spoiling the right of the people of our country to vote.

When the Samagi Jana Balawegaya sought the help of the court in this regard, the Supreme Court considered it and issued an interim order saying that the money allocated for the election should be used for the election activities, but the government was doing this by using two MPs loyal to it and highlighting a privilege issue in the parliament. Opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa said that due to this a huge crisis was created between the judiciary, the legislature and the executive which protects democracy.

Opposition Leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa said this while attending a special press conference held in Parliament last Friday (24). The joint opposition had organized this press conference against the non-holding of the election.

The leader of the opposition said that the government led by the president is trying hard to destroy the country’s democracy by creating a constitutional crisis and he condemns those efforts with deep disgust and said that he will stand as an opposition for the dignified existence of all the members of the judiciary.

By making use of the executive and parliamentary powers to embarrass the judges and bring them before the Privileges Committee, they are preparing to show their hand to the judiciary through character assassination and condemn it with contempt as a representative of the people who value democracy. The opposition leader said that they should be bound.

Therefore, the leader of the opposition asked the President to stop all political conspiracies and hold the election demanded by the people, otherwise some parties may engage in anti-democratic activities and hold the election before such adverse conditions arise for the country.
