A hospital pharmacist was remanded after stealing medicine donated by philanthropists and selling it outside for Rs.20,000! When the house was checked, there was more than 4 lakhs of money and a stock of medicines!

A suspect who stole medicine from Maharagama Apeksha hospital and sold to cancer patients was remanded till 28th by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s courts today.

The suspect was arrested by the officials of the Bribery Commission in connection with the theft of a drug given by donors to the Maharagama Apeksha  Hospital and selling it to cancer patients for an amount of 20,000 rupees.

He was then produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court where Colombo Chief Magistrate Mr. Prasanna Alwis ordered today (16) to remand the suspect until the 28th.

The concerned suspect was arrested when he agreed to sell the drug for 22,000 rupees to the patients coming for treatment at the cancer hospital and then tried to sell it for 21,000 rupees.

Later, the court was informed that when the officers searched the house of the suspect, they found an amount of 425,970 rupees and another stock of drugs of the same type.

The officials of the Bribery Commission further stated that the stock of drugs found in the house were packed in boxes with the government logo and that logo is used for the drugs donated by donors to the hospital.

The lawyers representing the suspect informed the court that since their client works as a pharmacist, he kept these medicines for the pharmacy he runs in his house.

The officers of the Bribery Commission stated here that this suspect does not have any license related to working as a pharmacist.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Mr. Prasanna Alvis ordered the suspect to be remanded until the 28th.
